What is Law, Order, and Power about?
The book represents a contribution to the trend begun by the American legal realists, who insisted that we must study the law in action as well as the law in the books. The vacuum in general knowledge about the law which characterized legal thinking for many years was in large measure a result of the failure to take seriously this dictum of the realists. Significantly, the realists’ case has nominally been won; legal scholars in America at least have by and large accepted the proposition that we must investigate systematically the law in action before we can fully understand the law in all its complexities.
