The effect of low temperature aging on type 316L austenitic stainless steel weld metal was studied. Specimens were aged at 400°C for times ranging from 100 to 5000 hours. Ferrite content was estimated before and after aging using magnetic and optical methods. Optical examination showed the ferrite phase dissolving significantly with aging time, reducing to 30% after 500 hours and 60% after 5000 hours.
