What is Dance History about?
Buried in the Sky, by Peter Zuckerman and Amanda Padoan, chronicles a disastrous season on K2 (the world's second-highest mountain). In vivid and harrowing detail, the authors recount the events surrounding the deaths of eleven mountaineers over the course of two days in 2008. 1 Their narrative pays particular attention to the shifting relationships between the various climbers and their support staff. At one point, some of the climbers gather for a celebration of an important local figure, and the authors highlight the antics of the French mountaineer Hugues D'Aubarède: A dance pit formed and Hugues boogied in the center. Dressed in slacks, a button-down shirt, a sportsman's cap, and a cashmere sweater, he hopped and flapped his arms to the music like an injured seagull. The crowd adored him. 2 This celebration follows a brief conflict between D'Aubarède and the highaltitude porters working for the expedition, who object when he photographs the corpses of the climbers who had died in previous seasons. 3 D'Aubarède's playful dancing appears to smooth things overthe authors add that Shaheen Baig, one of the porters, "decided he'd misjudged the good-natured Frenchman." 4 Yet from the
