A study of 962 patients suggests that progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) is a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as patients with PMA exhibited similar risk factors for shorter survival as those with ALS. Although PMA patients tended to live longer, the presence of upper motor neuron signs and other clinical features indicated a relentless progression akin to ALS. The findings advocate for the inclusion of PMA in therapeutic trials for ALS due to its overlapping characteristics.
