The study evaluated the effects of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis blockade on cardiac adaptations in rats undergoing aerobic training. Results indicated that while NO blockade induced hypertension in sedentary rats, it did not cause cardiac hypertrophy; however, in trained rats, it led to increased cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. This suggests that NO plays a critical role in cardiac adaptations resulting from aerobic exercise.
