Ferromagnetic materials like iron, cobalt and nickel are strongly attracted to magnetic fields and retain magnetism after the external magnetic field is removed. Paramagnetic materials such as aluminium are weakly attracted to magnetic fields but do not retain magnetism after removal of the external field. Diamagnetic materials like air and copper are repelled by magnetic fields and do not retain magnetism.
