The article evaluates a new severity of illness index for defining case mix groupings of hospitalized patients. It finds the index, which accounts for patient severity of illness, produces more homogeneous groups than methods not reflecting illness burden, with respect to charges and length of stay. These results have important implications for prospective reimbursement and cross-hospital comparison studies.
