What is Balban about?

Ghiyas ud-din Balban was the most powerful ruler of the Delhi Sultanate between Shamsuddin Iltutmish and Alauddin Khalji. He established a theory of absolute kingship that emphasized the divine right of kings, royal descent, and the king as despot. Balban strengthened the authority of the sultan through harsh punishments, strict court ceremonies, and an extensive spy network. His policies undermined the power of the nobility and ensured peace and order during his reign.
