What is A Heritage in Transition : Essays in the History of Ukrainians in Canada about?
In September 1891, Ivan Pillipiw and Wasyl Eleniak, two Ukranian peasants from the province of Galicia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, landed in Montreal and headed west to what are today the Prairie Provinces. Thus began the first wave of Ukranian immigration to Canada. Two further emigrations followed, the first in the interwar period (1924-1930) and the next after the Second World War, when thousands of Ukranian refugees chose emigration to Canada over repatriation to a Soviet-controlled homeland. While the majority of later Ukranian immigrants settled in Ontario, it was on the Prairies that their presence became most significant and where they were not opposed. Anglo-Canadians saw the establishment of isolated Ukranian bloc settlements as a threat, and prejudice on the basis of religious and cultural differences was widespread. Today Canada's Ukranian population, at 600,000, constitutes a group large enough and old enough to number among the founding peoples of the West.
