Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, and armaments manufacturer. He held over 355 patents and invented dynamite and gelignite, both of which found wide industrial and military applications. Towards the end of his life, concerned about his legacy, Nobel established the Nobel Prizes in his will to honor scientific, literary and peace efforts. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, five years after his death.
