EDF has detected stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in safety injection piping at multiple French nuclear power plants. Ultrasonic testing found circumferential cracks in piping elbows attributed to SCC of the stainless steel base metal and welds. Further inspections have uncovered additional indications at other plants. Destructive examinations confirmed the cracks are intergranular SCC.
