What is Preface about?
The idea of a special issue of Sedimentary Geology on Soft Sediment Deformation developed from the EGU session TS25, Deformation of soft sediment: interaction between gravity, compaction and tectonic stresses, that was convened in Vienna, Austria, in April 2005. The session provided a forum where researchers could meet and discuss recent advances in the topic from field and laboratory work. From the broad discussion and the large feedback, we are presenting a special issue which contains a selection of papers that covers different descriptions and approaches to the study of soft sediments. Although the concept that tectonic deformations do occur in unlithified sediment joined the view of surficial material deforming under gravity, a systematic analysis is still developing, both in terms of mechanical meanings and possible applications. This special issue aims in giving an up-to-date view of present studies in soft sediment deformation and in stimulating cross-thinking between different disciplines.
