The P&I Clubs originated from small hull insurance clubs formed by British shipowners in the 18th century who were dissatisfied with the cost and scope of insurance from monopoly providers. These hull clubs shared risk between members. Over time, shipowners took on more liability from crew injuries, passenger claims, and collisions.
