What is Clinical Correlates of Fear of Falling in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Multiple System Atrophy about?

Fear of falling (FoF), defined as "a lasting concern about falling that leads to an individual avoiding activities that a person remains capable of performing" [1], is a complex syndrome affecting functionality, quality of life, and increasing risk of institutionalization in the elderly population [2], and has been associated with worse balance, recurrent falls, anxiety, and cognitive impairment [3]. However, the association with falls has been variable and contrasting through different studies [4, 5]. FoF has been extensively evaluated in patients with idiopathic Parkinson disease [4-6], and associated with balance and gait alterations, and cognitive and psychiatric factors, has been proposed to work in a vicious circle of avoidance behavior perpetuating FoF, impairing functionality, and inducing falls [7]. However, FoF studies in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) or multiple system atrophy (MSA) are scarce [8]. Therefore, we designed a prospective study with the aim of evaluating the clinical correlates of FoF in patients with PSP and MSA.
