What is Hematopoiesis and Blood Cell Formation about?
Heparin is a natural anticoagulant that is originally isolated from bone marrow. The hepatic period of hematopoiesis in fetal development, where blood cells are produced in the liver, is considered the counterpart of extramedullary hematopoiesis in adults, which is the production of blood cells in sites other than the bone marrow. After about 3 weeks after birth, the bone marrow solely becomes the normal site of hematopoiesis.
