The rivers described in the preceding chapter themselves form the bars at the outlets of their delta channels, by the alluvium which they bring down from inland. The bars, however, found at the mouths of tideless rivers which are not in the process of forming deltas, owing to the small amount of material they carry into the sea, and at the mouths of tidal rivers in which the tidal volume is much larger than the freshwater discharge, cannot be attributed to this cause. In the case of these latter rivers, the bar is of marine, and not of fluvial origin, and is the result of the heaping-up-action of the waves along the coast, tending to form a continuous beach across the mouth of the river, which, in most instances, is only partially prevented by the scour of the tidal ebb and flow, and by the fresh-water discharge of the river.
