Chords are made up of three or more notes from a major scale. A major chord uses the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the scale. Chord formulas show which notes make up different types of chords like major, minor, dominant 7th, diminished, and augmented chords. Knowing chord formulas makes it easy to construct chords on the fretboard and to improvise over chords using the corresponding scales.
