These essays are based on a series of lectures delivered under the auspices of the Fabian Society. Early in 1939 the Society reorganised itself on amalgamation with the New Fabian Research Bureau. Its aims are the furtherance of socialism and the education of the public on socialist lines. It pursues these by the organisation of conferences, lectures and discussion groups, and by the publication of books, research pamphlets and popular tracts. Membership is open to all who are prepared to accept the Constitution of the Labour Party, and people of all progressive points of view are invited to become associates. These essays, like all publications on behalf of the Society, represent not the collective view of the Society but only those of the contributors. The Society's responsibility is limited to approving the contents as embodying facts and opinions worthy of consideration within the Labour Movement. [From prefatory matter]
