What is Molecular Weight Measurements of Polycarboxylic Acids in Water by Vapor Pressure Osmometry about?

Soil 12escarcIr rmlitute. Camda Dcparhmrt of Agricrclt~tcrc, Otfawa. Onfavio (Camtda) (IGxcived Februnry 24th. rgGg) Vapor pressure osmometry is used increasingly for measuring number-average molecular weights (E) of a variety of organic compounds. This method provides rapid molecular weight determinations at different temperatures in water as well as in organic solvents. When measured in water, i@ii values may, however, be erroneous because of dissociation of acidic functional groups. Thus, the authors recently found that molecular weights of a number of aliphatic and aromatic polycarboxylic acids were considerably lower than the theoretical values. Although the dissociation can be minimized by doing measurements in organic solvents, many naturally occurring polycarboxylic compounds are, however, insoluble or only slightly soluble in these media, so that water is the solvent of choice. Based upon the experimentally determined values of %%i and pi, a correction system was developed which makes possible calculations of accurate Mn values in aqueous solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe this correction system and to demonstrate its applicability to a number of represent
