El segundo volumen de escritos filosóficos de Plutarco critica la doctrina epicúrea (como hiciera con el estoicismo en el tomo anterior) y su materialismo, desde los postulados idealistas del platonismo. En este volumen se incluyen tres interesantes tratados en los que Plutarco ataca directamente y con vehemencia la filosofía epicúrea.'Contra Colotes', es una crítica feroz de la Lógica y la Física de esta doctrina;'Sobre la imposibilidad de vivir placenteramente según Epicuro'(formalmente una continuación del anterior) constituye un profundo y elaborado ataque a la Ética del filósofo del Jardín; finalmente, el opúsculo'De si está bien dicho lo de'vive ocultamente''supone una censura de la famosa máxima epicúrea. Los tres tratados dejan patente que Plutarco tenía un profundo conocimiento de la filosofía de Epicuro: éste es, tras Platón y Aristóteles, el filósofo más citado en la obra del de Queronea. Pero su pensamiento neoplatónico era incompatible con una doctrina materialista y hedonista, por lo que Plutarco contribuyó, en gran medida, a la formación de las acusaciones que, desde finales de la Antigüedad y durante el Medievo, dirigieron contra Epicuro desde Clemente de Alejandría
