What is Chest pain of gastrointestinal origin: Berezin S, Meadow MS, Glassman MS, et al Arch Dis Child 63:1457–1460 Dec 1988 about?
curred after the meal, but not the water in the elderly group. Four subjects had a decrease in systolic blood pressure of more than 25 mm Hg. The decrease in blood pressure was present by 15 minutes and persisted to 60 minutes. Heart rate increased by a mean of five beats per minute in the elderly group. No subjects experienced dizziness or other symptoms. No significant difference in before-and after-meal blood pressure or heart rate occurred in the control group. The authors conclude that postprandial blood pressure reduction occurs in healthy elderly patients. Although the study population exhibited no symptoms, the increase in heart rate may be inappropriate for the degree of fall in blood pressure in some patients. The authors postulate that the postprandial fall in blood pressure may contribute to syncope and falls in the elderly population and that blood pressure decrease may be exacerbated by medications or cerebrovascular disease in some patients.
