What is The Name of the Boethusians: A Reconsideration of Suggested Explanations and Another One about?
## I rom the time that R. Azariah de Rossi (Italy, sixteenth century) conjec- Ftured that the Boethusians and the Essenes were one and the same,I and especially since J. Grintz made the suggestion again,2 it has attracted many scholars. The central argument for this hypothesis is associated with the de- scription found in ancient sources about the division of Jewish society of the time into three sects. Namely, while Josephus mentions-alongside the Phar- isees and the Sadducees-a group which he calls Essenes, who are mentioned in other contemporary historical sources as well, the rabbinic sources, which do mention Pharisees and Sadducees, never refer to 'Essenes' but do refer to 'Boethusians'. The aforesaid hypothesis explains this situation by viewing 'Boethusians' as another name, or another orthography, for 'Essenes'. This hypothesis, which might take a variety of forms, has been formulated most popularly on the basis of the orthography of 'Boethusians' in early and reliable manuscripts of rabbinic texts.
