Gastropoda is a large phylum of molluscs that includes snails and slugs. It is extremely diverse, with over 65,000 living species. Gastropods can be found in nearly every habitat on Earth, from oceans to forests to deserts. They have torsion anatomy in which the visceral mass rotates 180 degrees, causing the anus to be situated above the head. This phylum has a fossil record dating back to the Late Cambrian period and includes many extinct families.
