What is Competing Theories of Economic Crisis about?

From Editor's Introduction: My aim in selecting the various explanations of economic crisis that are presented in this issue was to find representatives of ideologies or philosophies of economics. (There is one exception, which I will discuss presently.) I did not attempt to find anyone to defend the current orthodoxy because there are a number of orthodoxies today: variations on Keynesian thought and various forms of macroeconomics based on microeconomic foundations. My aim was not to replicate the refined debates among these views that take place in other economics journals, an unwieldy and unenlightening task. The main principle that ties together what I am calling mainstream or orthodox views is the assumption that crises are caused entirely through exogenous factors. Among the perspectives represented in this issue, only Scott Sumner's article on Milton Friedman and monetarism falls within that category. However, given what Sumner has to say, it would be hard to label him (or Friedman) as orthodox.
