What is Understanding Adventitious Breath Sounds about?
Adventitious breath sounds are additional sounds heard during auscultation that are abnormal. They include crackles, rhonchi, wheezing, stridor, and friction rubs. Crackles are discontinuous sounds caused by air bubbling through fluid or collapsed alveoli reopening. Rhonchi and wheezes are continuous sounds caused by airway narrowing from conditions like asthma or secretions. Stridor results from an obstructed upper airway. A friction rub occurs between inflamed pleural layers.
