This chapter describes the design and fabrication of the steel planes and magnet coils for the MINOS near and far detectors. The far detector consists of two arrays of 243 vertically suspended 8-meter wide steel planes assembled from 2-meter plates. The near detector uses single steel planes that are smaller at 6.2 by 3.8 meters. Both detectors use magnetic coils to generate a 1.5 Tesla field in the steel planes. Prototype planes are being constructed and tested to validate the design calculations.
