What is Mailnet: a Convenient Inter-campus Electronic Mail Service about?
During the past year there has been rapid growth in the use of computer-based electronic mail systems. Electronic mail is used for communication among colleagues on a given campus and, more recently, among peers on different campuses. Campus-based electronic mail systems have proven convenient and effective for local users. Distant users find such systems useful but relatively expensive and inconvenient. The Mailnet service currently being developed by EDUNET and EDUCOM will provide a means for electronic mail communication with distant colleagues by linking numerous local systems together. Each user will have the convenience and low cost of a local system even when communicating with persons elsewhere in the world. Operators of local (e.g., campus) mail systems will be able to connect to Mailnet without having to acquire any new equipment or to modify existing equipment or operating systems.
