In January 1906 Ras Makonnen set out from Harar to Addis Ababa. In route, he contracted typhus or, according to other accounts, dysentery. Makonnen was rushed to Qulubi, a Christian holy place, where he passed away on March 21, 1906. In his final hours he wrote to Menelik asking him to care for Tafari.The town of Harar mourned-church bells rang, cannons fired. Tafari, though stunned, made preparations to be proclaimed Harar's governor. It was too hasty. He was immediately summoned to Addis Ababa to Menelik's palace. The Ethiopians mourn forty days, and Tafari was told that only after the mourning period would the emperor make new appointments.Addis Ababa was a revelation for Tafari. It was already a town of some fifty thousand inhabitants, with new buildings and foreign embassies in huge compounds. It held a sizable community of diplomats and traders: Western Europeans, Indians, Greeks, and Armenians.
