- Five passengers died in a fire on a train traveling between Carlisle and Glasgow in Scotland on June 8, 1950. The fire broke out in the second coach of the 11-car train as it was climbing Beattock Summit. - Within 3 minutes of passing inspection, smoke was seen pouring from the middle and rear of the second coach.
