What is Mermaid about?

A group of drunk men in a tavern verbally and physically abuse a mermaid who had come ashore, not understanding human customs or language. They taunt, burn, and poke her with cigarettes while laughing, to which she does not respond as speech and emotions are foreign to her. She silently returns to the cleansing river but ultimately swims away to die, unable to recover from the trauma of her interaction with the men.
