What is Polytypism of LiSr2Ge3 and the Solid Solutions LiSr2SixGe3–x and LiSr2–xEuxGe3 (0 x < 1) about?
## Abstract Three modifications of LiSr~2~Ge~3~ were prepared by solid state syntheses at high temperatures under inert conditions in sealed niobium ampoules. α‐LiSr~2~Ge~3~ [space group __Pnnm__ (No. 58), __a__ = 11.102(1), __b__ = 11.862(1), __c__ = 4.631(1) Å, __Z__ = 2] is isostructural to LiCa~2~__Tt__~3~ (__Tt__ = Si, Ge), containing a one‐dimensional infinite germanium chain in (__tttctc__)__~n~__ conformation. β‐LiSr~2~Ge~3~ [space group __Fmmm__ (No. 69), __a__ = 8.733(1), __b__ = 8.996(1), __c__ = 15.045(2) Å, __Z__ = 4] crystallizes with the AgCa~2~Si~3~ structure. The β‐phase shows a tendency for lithium deficiency, which may be as small as 6 % but can be larger. γ‐LiSr~2~Ge~3~ [space group __Fddd__ (No. 70), __a__ = 8.675(3), __b__ = 15.066(5), __c__ = 18.258(5) Å, __Z__ = 8] is isostructural to LiBa~2~Tt~3~. The latter two structures contain planar and distorted Ge~6~‐rings, respectively. Comparison of the structures reveals significant changes of lattice parameters and bond lengths. β‐LiSr~2~Ge~3~ may be stabilized by a slightly smaller lithium content due to preparation procedure. This assumption is supported by the structure analysis and total energy calculations.
