About this document
Shear Strength of Sand Backfills Comparison by Patrick Aranda is a document available to read on EtoBox.
This study compares the shear strength of 30 sand backfill materials with varying gravel content using small-scale (SSDS) and large-scale (LSDS) direct shear tests. The results indicate that the friction angles obtained from both test methods are statistically similar, with differences generally within 2-4 degrees, regardless of the gravel content. The findings suggest that shear strength measurements for clean sand backfill with less than 30% gravel can be reliably obtained using either testing method.
