This patent describes an improved process for producing 1,2-propylene glycol through the hydrolysis of 1,2-propylene oxide. The process involves hydrolyzing the oxide at an elevated temperature and pressure in an aqueous medium maintained at a pH between 6-6.5 and containing 3-5 parts water per part oxide. This controls side reactions forming dipropylene glycol. Examples show high conversions to propylene glycol when following these conditions.
