What is Juan Pablo Duarte: Death and Legacy about?

Juan Pablo Duarte (1813-1876) was the founder and main ideologue of the independence of the Dominican Republic. He was born in Santo Domingo and studied in Europe, where he absorbed the liberal and nationalist ideas of the time. Upon his return in 1833, he founded the secret society La Trinitaria to fight against Haitian domination. Although he achieved independence in 1844, Duarte never gained power and died in exile in Venezuela, forgotten by his compatriots.
