What is Some Comments on Reflectance Measurements of Wet Soils about?
The observed visual darkening of wet natural soils has been previously ascribed to total internal reflections of the reflected radiation in a water layer covering the soil. Following this, and the index of refraction of the liquid and the reflectance of the sample when dry being known, it is possible in principle to predict the visual reflectance of a saturated soil sample. Laboratory measurements were performed to evaluate this; samples of varying reflectance and liquids of different indices of refraction were used. The results support the explanation and indicate conditions where it should be used with caution.
