What is Past European Land Cover Reconstruction about?

This thesis develops statistical models to reconstruct past land cover and human land use in Europe based on fossil pollen data from the past 6000 years. The pollen counts are used to estimate land cover compositions for grid cells near sampling sites. First, a Gaussian Markov random field model is developed to spatially interpolate the pollen-based land cover compositions. A Dirichlet model is also developed to better capture the compositional variation. A sensitivity analysis shows the results are robust
