John Henry Taylor was born in 1824 at Norwich, England, the son of John Henry Taylor (d. 1860) and Eliza Jane Hawkes Taylor (1805-1882). He was a sailor on a ship sailing to New York in 1848, when he met Mary Ann Elizabeth Jones (1828-1899), who was immigrating to the United States. They were married at New York City in 1849. They had ten children, 1851-1870. The family lived in New York City, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Nyack, New York. He enlisted in the Union Navy in 1861 and was discharged in 1863 due to poor health. After the death of John Henry Taylor, Mary Ann Taylor with her youngest children and Eliza Hakes Taylor, Henry's mother, migrated to California where Mary Ann's grown children were living. She died at Cedarville, California
