About this document
Understanding Milk Fever in Cattle by chacha is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Milk fever, also known as parturient paresis, is a metabolic disease of dairy cows around calving caused by low blood calcium levels. As cows begin lactating, large amounts of calcium are secreted in milk which decreases blood calcium. Clinical signs progress from weakness to recumbency and death if not treated. Intravenous calcium treatment is very effective at resolving signs. Proper mineral supplementation before and after calving can help prevent milk fever.
