What is Religion and Tolerance in the Mughal Empire about?

The Mughals inherited Islam but were generally religiously tolerant during their rule, with some exceptions. Emperor Akbar introduced a new syncretic religion called Din-e-Elahi but it was not widely adopted. Later emperors like Aurangzeb were more orthodox Muslims and imposed Sharia law, destroying Hindu temples. Overall the Mughals allowed diversity but also sometimes manipulated religion for political reasons.
