Penguin mass market paperbacks of the early to mid twentieth century are classics of design. Different colors were used to designate genres in the early publications. Red was for fiction. Harold Acton, the author, was considered the model for Anthony Blanche in "Brideshead Revisted". Waugh denied this claim' however, his letters revealed that Acton was part of the inspiration for the character. Peonies and Ponies was originally published in 1941, then reprinted by Penguin as a mass market paperback in 1950. Acton moved from Florence to China in 1932, where he studied Chinese poetry and translation. This novel is a sharply observed portrait of expatiate life in Beijing (called Peiping at that time).
