What is David Jowitt: Nigerian English about?

Nigerian English is the first book to treat issues on this variety with the required depth and dexterity. The author has continued to distinguish himself as one the foremost scholars on Nigerian English and is, in consequence, eminently qualified to write a book with such a brave title. The book defines complex and continually controversial issues in very simple ways that make it reader-friendly. In this vein, Nigerian English is defined in the "narrow sense" (p. 1) and is also given a broader interpretation. Bringing together the narrow and broader senses into one volume is quite a feat, the absence of which might have robbed the book of its uniqueness. Nigerian English consists of seven parts. The first part "Introduction" has five main sections within which the author discusses Nigeria's geographical, demographic, historical and ethnic backgrounds, and how all these shape Nigerian English. The author expounds the political complexity and the continual controversies surrounding the ethno-linguistic attitudes of Nigerians to the English language. He explains the strong connection between Nigerian English and Standard British English alongside Pidgin and other languages. Intriguing
