What is The Role of Stimulus Properties and Cognitive Processes in the Quality of the Multisensory Perception of Synchrony about?
The Perception of Synchrony Every day we perceive events that are multisensory, well aligned in time, and unifi ed. This percept is a given fact and we rarely think that the synchrony of those events is not the rule but rather the exception. Scientists, however, are well aware of this exceptional percept (although they also experience it), given the fact that the various sensory processing systems require varying amounts of time in order to receive and process a particular sensory input . Apart from sensory processing, vigorous research over 200 years has shown that synchrony is an exception also due to other factors associated, among others, with the qualities of the stimulus presented, the age and experience of the individual, the context of stimulus presentation, and so forth. As of today, we are still in search of how and where in the brain the integration of those incoming inputs occurs in order to yield the percept of synchronous and unifi ed multisensory events in the world . Thus, the "quest" of understanding synchrony perception continues today. This chapter will describe how the question of synchrony perception came about in experimental psychology and, subsequently, it w
