Lise Meitner was an Austrian-Swedish physicist who lived from 1878 to 1968. She discovered the radioactive element protactinium and worked on radioactive and nuclear topics during the 1900s. Meitner had to work in the basement of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute due to rules barring women, but later became the first female physics professor in Germany. She was forced to flee Germany in 1938 due to her Jewish heritage and the rise of the Nazis, but continued her scientific work until her death.
