The main thesis of this book is that the theoretical challenge of Tugendhat is not really directed against hermeneutics and its Heideggerian bases but rather against analytical philosophy, to which the German philosopher seems closer for his concerns in defending method, logic, and a rigorous notion of truth. A parallel thesis to this one, or better, a slightly different formulation of the same thesis, is Zabala’s argument that Tugendhat is, together with Gadamer, one of the most original disciples and interpreters of Heidegger. If Gadamer represents a hermeneutical Heideggerianism, then Tugendhat represents an “analytical” one. In these terms, this book’s thesis seems quite audacious and shocking, but its meaning, even if one does not share its exaggerated aspects (such as “Gadamerians” like myself), is quite solidly discussed in Zabala’s study. Driven by analytical concerns, Tugendhat studies Heidegger and discusses hermeneutics. He discusses the problem of truth not only as the general revelation of Being but also as the truth of statements.
