What is Niobium Based Tetragonal Tungsten Bronzes as Potential Anodes for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Synthesis and Electrical Characterisation about?

In this paper we report studies on a range of niobate based tungsten bronzes, with a view to analysing their potential as anode materials in SOFCs. Six systems were studied, (Sr Ba ) Ti Nb O , Sr La Ti Nb O , 12x x 0.6 0.2 0.8 3 0.62x x 0.21x 0.82x 3 (Sr Ba )Na NbO , (Ba Ca ) Ti Nb O , Ba A NbO (A 5 Ca, Sr), and Ba NbO , and the electrical 0.42x x 0.2 3 12x x 0.6 0.2 0.8 3 0.52x x 3 0.3 2.8 220 conductivities were examined over a range of oxygen partial pressures (10 -1 bar). All the systems showed good 21 220 conductivity in low oxygen partial pressures, with values as high as 8 S cm at 9308C (P(O ) 5 10 bar). As the oxygen 2 21 / 4 partial pressure was raised the conductivity dropped showing in most cases an approximate [P(O )] dependence and 2 good re-oxidation kinetics. Of all the samples studied the (Sr Ba ) Ti Nb O and (Ba Ca ) Ti Nb O systems 12x x 0.6 0.2 0.8 3 12x x 0.6 0.2 0.8 3 appear most promising for potential use as anode materials in SOFCs.
