What is Europe: Spain to Italy about?
[Division of the world into parts] 1. So much for the position and wonders of the earth, waters and stars, as well as the character and dimensions of the universe. Now on to its parts, although this too is considered a never-ending task, not undertaken lightly or without incurring some criticism. In this field above all others it is fairer to make allowances, since it is far from surprising that someone born human should not know all things human. So I shall not follow any single writer, but rather whichever one I shall judge to be the most truthful for each region, because with few exceptions each takes the greatest care to describe locations in which he was active.2. So I shall not blame or refute anyone. The bare names of places will be set down and will be given with all possible brevity, deferring their fame and the reasons for it to the appropriate sections; for at this point the treatment is comprehensive. This is why I should like it to be understood that names will be mentioned without reference to their fame, just as they were originally before any record of achievement; they form a kind of catalog, although one of the world and of Nature. 3. The whole world is divided
