About this document
Metabolic Alkalosis Overview by Allyssa Mackinnon is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Metabolic alkalosis is caused by a loss of acid from the body or gain of bicarbonate. It can be precipitated by factors like vomiting, diuretic use, or medical conditions. This causes extracellular potassium levels to decrease and hydrogen ions to move into cells while bicarbonate moves out of cells into extracellular fluid. The end result is a pH over 7.45, decreased stimulation of medullary chemoreceptors, carbon dioxide retention, and signs like tingling, dizziness, and muscle issues.
