What is Orthoses for Osteoporosis about?

Orthoses are commonly used in clinical practice to treat osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs), although there is limited scientific support for this use. Osteoporotic VCFs are a rising public health concern, given the increasing population of older individuals and incidence of osteoporosis and, subsequently, VCFs. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, which can lead to an increased risk for fractures, including VCFs. VCFs can result in acute and/or chronic back pain, functional limitations, respiratory symptoms, and mood impairment. Goals of treatment for VCFs include pain reduction, improvement of posture, immobilization for healing, and providing support for patients with significant muscle weakness. In addition to surgical and pharmacologic treatment options, nonpharmacologic treatment options such as orthoses are a common component of the comprehensive clinical care program to treat and support patients with VCFs.
