What is SCIENTOLOGY about?

SCIENTOLOGY ## 666 MANY members, Victorians in particular, will recall that as a result of the activities of a group of people calling themselves scientologists, a Board of Inquiry into scientology was appointed by the Government of Victoria in 1963. Mr. Kevin Victor Anderson, Q.C., constituted the Board, and issued a long and comprehensive report late in 1:l65. What is scientology? The word itself cannot properly be defined except that derivatively it means knowing about knowing or science of knowledge. Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, the founder of the cult, said in 1965 that it was the "science of learning how to learn". Scientology grew out of another "science", an earlier Hubbard invention called dianetics, which he described as "the modern science of mental health". No matter how it is defined, it became obvious in the early 1960's that its practice was inherently bad and constituted a danger to mental health, in that a type of crude psycho-analysis and command or authoritative hypnosis was being carried out by people who had no knowledge or appreciation of, or skill in, orthodox psychiatry or psychology.
