Chlorine inactivation of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H5N1) was tested. Two H5N1 strains were exposed to chlorinated buffer at pH 7 and 8 and 5°C. Free chlorine concentrations typically used for drinking water treatment were sufficient to inactivate both virus strains by over 3 orders of magnitude within 1 minute of exposure.
